Kindergartners have been focusing on reading, writing, and counting numbers and
number words 0-20,

In grades 1-5 our focus has been on becoming fluent in Math Facts.

WHAT IS A MATH FACT?

An Addition/Subtraction Math Fact is a math question such as 3+4 or 6-2 that a child should know quickly.  Also, Multiplication/Division Fact is a math question such as 3x4 or 12÷4 that children should know quickly. If a child can say the answer within a couple of seconds, this is usually considered mastery of the Fact.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR MY CHILD TO LEARN THEIR FACTS?

Math Facts are important because they form the building blocks for higher-level Math concepts.  Skills such as adding and subtracting larger numbers, telling time, counting money, measurement, long multiplication and division are just a few of the concepts that a child will encounter. If your child has mastered Math Facts, these concepts will be significantly easier and they will be better equipped to solve them more quickly.  If they are spending a lot of time doing the basic facts, they are more likely to be confused with the process and get lost in the calculations.
